Risk Arbitrage

This strategy involves transaction-specific analysis seeking to profit by acquiring securities which are discounted from the value to be paid for them in a proposed merger or acquisition due to the uncertainty of transaction timing and completion. The difficulty is in analyzing the risk of delay or non-completion and determining when during the period from the commencement of a proposed merger or acquisition to the conclusion (successful or unsuccessful) of the transaction it is most efficient — on a present value basis — to take a position. Risk/merger arbitrage Portfolio Managers typically seek speculative profits from the purchase of shares in forecasted acquisition targets, while maintaining defensive positions through hedges in acquiring companies and disciplined risk management. Inside of investing there is a culture known as 'arbitrageurs.' While there's many different types of arbitrage, merger arbitrage has become an increasingly-used strategy amongst traders and investors during the last few years. The primary reason: the private equity boom.

Merger arbitrageurs try to purchase stocks after a buyout has been announced but before it has been completed. For example, if a stock is being taken out for $22 per share and is currently trading for $20 per share, the 'arbs' might buy the stock betting that the deal is completed and they can keep their 10% assumed rate of return. Understandably, the increased private equity activity during the last few years has helped to fuel a boom in this strategy. More...

A Nonparametric Test of Market Timing
by Wei Jiang
In this paper we propose a nonparametric test for money managers’ market timing ability and apply the analysis to a large sample of mutual funds that have different benchmark indices. The test (i) only requires the ex post returns of the funds and the benchmark portfolios; (ii) isolates timing from selectivity; (iii) separates the quality of timing information a money manager possesses from the aggressiveness with which she reacts to such information; and (iv) is robust to different information and incentive structures as well as underlying distributions. Theta—the parameter for timing ability—is on average below the neutral level (indexation) among actively managed domestic equity funds, and is very difficult to predict from observable fund characteristics...

   Today's Humor
Because our former small-town parish was not a wealthy one, our pastor was dependent on parishioners for upkeep and maintenance of the church.

Once he asked my husband, Sam, to rewire the confessionals. The only way to reach the wiring was to enter the attic above the altar and crawl over the ceiling by balancing on the rafters.

Concerned for my husband's safety, I waited in a pew.

Unbeknownst to me, some parishioners were congregating in the vestibule. They paid little attention to me, probably assuming I was praying.

Worried about my husband, I looked up toward the ceiling and yelled, "Sam, Sam, are you up there? Did you make it okay?"

There was quite an outburst from the vestibule when Sam's hearty voice echoed down, "Yes, I made it up here just fine!"
